Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Phil Coulson’s long-awaited reunion with the Avengers is something that will certainly get resolved according to Marvel TV’s head honcho Jeph Loeb. Clark Gregg made his debut as Agent Coulson in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man in 2008 alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. He ended up reprising his role in Iron Man 2, Thor, and then again in The Avengers - not to mention in two Marvel One-Shots as well - but that was the last time that audiences saw him on the big screen.
Gregg’s Coulson was killed by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) aboard the Helicarrier in The Avengers, which ended up becoming a catalyst for the Earth’s mightiest heroes to band together and thwart Loki’s Chitauri invasion in New York City. While that was the last time that audiences saw Gregg in theaters and the last time that the Avengers saw Coulson alive… he’s not dead anymore. Joss Whedon resurrected Coulson by sending him to T.A.H.I.T.I. and made him the leading star of ABC’s flagship Marvel TV show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is on the verge of airing its highly-anticipated 100th episode. But ever since Coulson came back, fans have wondered when he will meet the Avengers again. While a select few people know that he’s alive - namely Lady Sif, Maria Hill, and Nick Fury - the superheroes don’t, but that could change in the future.
In an interview with EW for the upcoming 100th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel TV president Jeph Loeb says that Phil Coulson’s reunion with the Avengers might actually happen in a surprising way, though it’s unclear what way that could possibly be at the moment. Here’s what he said: “It’s certainly something that will get resolved, and it may get resolved in a very surprising way.”
So far, Marvel’s movies - particularly Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War - have impacted Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (and other Marvel TV shows) occasionally in major ways. For instance, the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D. in The Winter Soldier reshaped the fundamental nature of the TV series (for the better), and the Sokovia Accords in Civil War have become a point of contention amongst the show’s heroes as well. However, whatever happens on the TV-side of the MCU has almost no bearing on what goes on in the movies, save for a few small details such as the location of Loki’s sceptre prior to Age of Ultron.
Fans hoping to see Marvel TV’s heroes crossover with the big screen heroes have been sorely disappointed time and again, and it doesn’t look like that type of crossover will ever happen, at least not in the near future. But still, one thing fans also want to see is Coulson’s emotional reunion with the Avengers. After all, he was the glue between the movies in Phase 1, and he’s played an integral role in shaping both sides of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the very beginning. At least now there’s hope that Coulson’s reunion with the Avengers will happen at some point, but Loeb won’t say what that reunion will be like and when it will happen.
Given that Avengers: Infinity War is supposed to tie-in all corners of the MCU, it’s possible, though still unlikely, that Coulson could appear at some point in the film or in one of its post-credits scenes. Or, he could show up in Captain Marvel or Avengers 4 in 2019. Whatever ends up happening, fans will surely be looking forward to it. But if it doesn’t happen, Gregg is fine with that because, as he says, he has his “hands full” with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the moment.
