New artwork for the Arrowverse 2018 crossover event titled “Elseworlds” gives the characters featured in the event a comic book makeover. The image shows Arkham Asylum doctor John Deegan (Jeremy Davies) laughing maniacally while the heroes of the Arrowverse are pitted against each other.

The three-night event, which will air in the second week of December, will bring together the Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), the Flash (Grant Gustin), Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) for an adventure that will serve as the Arrowverse debut of Ruby Rose as Batwoman and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane. The crossover is expected to involve parallel universes. Set photos and promotional material have revealed that during “Elseworlds” Amell and Gustin will be swapping costumes and identities, though the reasons for this have yet to be explained.

DC Comics has released new artwork for “Elseworlds” which features Barry and Oliver in each other’s costumes, Dr. Deegan, Supergirl, Superman, Batwoman, and the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett). The art, drawn by artist Amy Reeder, is done in the style of a comic book. An epic battle between the superheroes appears to be taking place in Gotham City with a silhouette of the Monitor in the background. Dr. Deegan’s laughter suggests that the scientist is somehow pulling the strings.

The inclusion of the Monitor and Dr. Deegan presents interesting questions about how important these characters will be to the story. It’s possible that Deegan will end up being the event’s main antagonist. As for the Monitor, this character will likely be the force that spurs the heroes into action. In the comics, the Monitor bears a lot of similarities to the Marvel Comics character, The Watcher. When the multiverse is threatened, the Monitor takes it upon himself to give a warning to the heroes of the DC Universe.

Whatever’s going on, it may have something to do with alternate timelines, which would explain why Amell is playing the Flash and Gustin is playing the Green Arrow. “Elseworlds” could explore different versions of each character. Set photos have revealed that at least some of them will be facing off, as a black-suited Superman was spotted fighting Green Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl. This new artwork certainly adds fuel to the theory that the person orchestrating all of it is Dr. Deegan.
