With just a few episodes of season 4 left, Arrow has been building to the character death that viewers have been dreading since it was offered up as a flash-forward teaser back in October. There has already been a lot of life-and-death upheaval for Team Arrow, including two very different kinds of resurrection from Sara (Caity Lotz) and Ray (Brandon Routh), who then went off to save the world on Legends of Tomorrow.

Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) also narrowly escaped death at the hands of Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), but unfortunately her relationship with Oliver (Stephen Amell) didn’t survive. Her role in crime-fighting was also temporarily changed due to her spinal cord injury, but Curtis’ bio-chip gave her the ability to walk again – straight out of the life of both Oliver’s identities. Now it turns out that empty seat in the Green Arrow lair could be filled by Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum) and his genius technical brain.

After Curtis just stumbled in on Team Arrow and their secret identities in episode ‘Beacon of Hope,’ TVLine reports that Kellum has been elevated to series regular, starting with season 5. It isn’t just his tech skills that could come in handy to our heroes, however. Arrow has been careful to lay out clues over time to Curtis’ always-noble intentions and some not-too-shabby athletic ability.

It’s not surprising that the character will have a larger role in season 5. Based on DC’s Michael Holt, a.k.a. Mr. Terrific, Curtis was always meant for greater things than just supplying a bit of comic relief over at Palmer Tech. Debuting in episode 2 of this season, his introduction was as an employee who tried to use his intellect to save jobs at the struggling company. He and Felicity bonded over their concern for trying to make the world a better place, rather than just trying to survive in it.

Now that Felicity has proclaimed she wants to do good on a grander scale than just technical wizardry in the Green Arrow bunker, there’s definitely room for someone else who can pick up the slack for our superheroes. The season’s not over yet, however, and how much Felicity will be involved with Oliver from here on out isn’t set in stone. That looming death also means we might lose someone else in the vigilantes’ fight against evil, so Curtis may find himself taking on a role much greater than he ever expected.

Arrow continues Wednesday with ‘Eleven-Fifty-Nine’ at 8pm on The CW.
