Animated series Vixen may have been a shot in the dark for CW Seed following the huge success of The CW network’s take on some of DC’s most-loved superheroes, but with the Arrowverse’s large fan base obviously getting behind the animated series and encouraging Arrow creators to bring Vixen (Megan Echikunwoke) to the live-action show for a guest spot earlier this year, super-producer Marc Guggenheim has now also been working on spin-off animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

No news yet has been given on the status of Vixen following the end of its second season in November, but Guggenheim is now teasing a major announcement for the show, whilst also dishing out more details about The Ray. Chatting in an exclusive interview with Collider about the two shows, Guggenheim also offered hints as to how both series may play into the goings on of the live-action CW Arrowverse.

“We just finished the outline for [Freedom Fighters:] The Ray. I’ve got my writing staff assembled, we’re all working on it. I’m actually really excited about it, not just because the project’s cool, but because basically we’re going about writing it a different way than we did Vixen. It’s a bit more ambitious. It ties into an announcement that’s going to be made about Vixen pretty soon. So expect a Vixen announcement that I think is very, very cool, and we’re moving forward on The Ray.

“It’s a lot of fun. One of the things we’ve done is we’ve written in, as we did with Vixen, parts for the various actors who play characters in the Arrowverse. We have a couple of ideas that, if they come to fruition, you’ll see some of these Arrowverse characters in ways you never saw them before.”

Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), Black Canary (Katie Cassidy) and The Flash (Grant Gustin) have all appeared in Vixen in the past, and since the show takes place in an earlier timeline than the current live-action seasons on The CW, so it shouldn’t be difficult for show bosses to find even more ways to intertwine the storylines taking place on both the small screen and online at CW Seed. With Guggenheim teasing a major Vixen announcement, it’s likely the show will be returning for a third season alongside The Ray at some point in 2017.

This is huge news for fans of the animated superhero world, but also those who are wrapped up in the goings on of Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. With those four shows recently crossing over in one of television’s biggest events in history, this news doesn’t come as too big of a surprise.

Of course, there’s always the chance that those behind-the-scenes are getting too ahead of themselves. Building storylines that interlink between not only four live-action shows but two animated series is going to prove very challenging. If there’s anybody who’s up for that challenge however, it would be Guggenheim and the team around him. They’ve proved time and again that they’re capable of balancing a whole selection of shows at once.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray is expected to premiere on CW Seed in 2017. Vixen is available now at CWSeed.com.
