Season 5 of Arrested Development will be split in half, with 8 episodes debuting on Netflix on May 29th and the rest of the season coming out at a later date. After giving us a remixed season 4, Netflix will soon release season 5 of the classic cult sitcom Arrested Development. The streamer recently dropped a trailer confirming the release date, while previewing all the hilarity to come as the Bluths get their long awaited “new new beginning.”
After a fragmented season 4 featuring not a lot of character interaction, season 5 will get back to the old Arrested Development family dynamic (they promise). In other words, everyone will once again be getting on each other’s nerves. Expect mass chicken dances galore. Plot-wise, the season revolves mainly around a murder-mystery involving Lucille 2, who went missing during season 4, leaving most of the other characters under suspicion for having caused her disappearance.
Unfortunately, fans of Arrested Development won’t get to see the entire new season when it debuts on Netflix on May 29th, 2018. As reported by EW, the 16-episode season 5 will be split in half, with the first 8 episodes dropping on the 29th and rest premiering at some unannounced later date. This move may frustrate fans who wish to see all the episodes at once, but Netflix is doing it to beat the Emmy eligibility deadline of May 31st. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which drops on May 30th, will also split its season for the same reason.
Much of the pre-release discussion about Arrested Development has centered on that divisive season 4, and how the show can bounce back. We at least know show creator Mitch Hurwitz appreciates the issues people had with season 4, as he made clear in his apologetic statement announcing the remix. Of course, not only did the remix attempt to fix the season’s busted narrative with recuts and new narration, it also bumped the episode count from 15 to 22 in order to help the series qualify for syndication (and the major revenue that comes with same).
Ultimately though, the only real way to wash away the bad taste of season 4 is to deliver a great season 5. Though the season apparently centers on the Lucille 2 mystery, other plot lines will also emerge. At least one of these plot lines involves Lindsay Bluth running for Congress - because the world needs another completely self-absorbed, delusional person in government. And of course, expect Mitch Hurwitz to further expand upon the show’s endless array of running gags.

From the Arrested Development season 5 trailer we know Tobias is still struggling with his identity (and hair). Meanwhile, Buster upgrades from a hook to a very dubious looking robot hand. Also, George Michael has an apparent new love interest (or someone he wants to be his new love interest). And of course, Michael is (cue Ron Howard) the one son who has no choice but to keep them all together. Unless he finally comes to his senses and runs away for good.
